I figured I would get a discussion going on turbo setups for the 6.4 if anyone is interested in adding more air to their truck. There are a few setups out there available that match really well with the stock fuel system and big tunes. If anyone wanting to upgrade wants to start a discussion and/or learn a little, here is your opportunity.

I am definitely gonna upgrade around May and I got a few questions. First is how hard would it be to light Elite's Max Power turbos with the 300 or 310 tune. Seconds is which sounds the best of all the setups. This 5 ton pissed off hair dryer noise has got to go

It wouldn't be a problem if you live close to sea level, but I wouldn't recommend it. You wouldn't get full potential out of them. High Powers or Tow Power X's would be ideal for stock fuel. They also sound really good. Much different than stock. If you have heard Max Powers, the High Powers and Tow Power X setups sound pretty much the same. A lot of whistle. I'll try and locate some sound clips.

Sea level is good cause I live in Florida. And does the Max Power really flow the much more air than the High powers? I mean I will upgrade the fuel system and maybe put the nozzles y'all had on the site or maybe smaller ones on but none of this "shooting for 1000+ HP" stuff. I just want power, reliability and maybe some appearance and good sound to go with it.

Yes, they do. Rudy's Diesel has made over 950 HP with Max Powers on fuel. I don't think High Powers are capable of much more than 825-850 HP.
I think the perfect combo for you would be an Air Dog with Elite's upgrade kit, 60 HP nozzles, ported fuel rails, High Power compounds or Max Power compounds, and obviously a wastegate. Most upgrade the valvetrain with Elite's stage I kit and their pushrods when they go to the big compounds.
I actually think that High Powers and Max Powers could easily be run on a truck without a wastegate on stock fuel. Like I said, Max Powers may not be the most ideal on stock fuel though. High Powers are though. There are 3-4 people running that setup and love it.
Plus, if you went with High Powers and stock fuel, you could put money elsewhere to make the truck more reliable. The only mod that is necessary to the fuel system for the High Powers is an Air Dog with the Elite fuel line kit because the stock fuel bowl has to be deleted. That would be a super fun setup with the 250 and up tunes. Instant spool up and low EGT's.

Thanks for the videos Jeff. They actually narrowed down my decision to the Tow Power X compounds and the High power compounds. My question is do they share a common housing and what numbers could I expect from the Tow Power X's.
On the housing part question, I mean if I bought one set of compounds and then later I wanted to upgrade could I just buy the wheels or do none of them share common housings?

The Tow Power X and High Power setups use the exact same low pressure turbo. The difference is the VGT. The wheel is larger on the High Power compounds. It uses a 63mm inducer on the VGT. The Tow Power X uses a 59mm inducer.
As for power, the Tow Power X setup is going to put you in the 650-680 range on stock fuel. You also don't have to do a single thing to your fuel system. No fuel bowl delete or Air Dog like the High Power compounds.

Tow Powers X sounds like a deal. I can run the stock fuel and use the money I save to stud my engine with elites H-11 studs.
Just to clarify if I want to upgrade to the High powers later down the road, given that I have upgraded the fuel system, it may be possible to just buy the larger wheel for the VGT?

It would probably require buying another VGT turbo. I believe Tadd has to modify for the increase from 59mm to 63mm. You would also need some piping changes on the hot side. I actually think that there probably isn't a whole lot of difference between the 2 setups unless you go big fuel. I think if you went with 60-85 hp nozzles on both kits, horsepower gains would be similar. Maybe 15-20 hp difference. It's going to be 110 hp nozzles and bigger where you would probably see the big difference. Tow Power X's would probably get out of their efficiency range above 85 hp nozzles and be extremely smokey. High Powers matched with 85-110's would probably ideal. Max Powers matched with 110's is ideal. Once you get above 110's, you better be dedicating your truck to competition use. 150's and bigger are just too smokey for street use, period.

A member on here has recently done the Elite Tow Power atmospheric charger and has a great review of it over on PowerStrokeArmy. I asked him to add the same review over here. I think a lot of you may be interested in this upgrade due to the cost/benefits factor. I have already made up my mind that I will be doing it. I think you will understand why when the review is posted.

As Jeff just said. I think I am the first one to have the Elite Tow power low pressure turbo match with the stock VGT. I'm very impressed with it.
Truck at idle sounds the same. Under a load there is more whistle that increase with boost. Sounds good. There is a small decrease in exhaust hiss. Turbo spools as quick as stock and maybe quicker then stock above 2k rpms.
All my driving tonight was with the spartan 275. Max boost was 47 psi. Max ebp was 48 psi. Basically the same as stock. Made a run from 20-100mph with a max of 950 egt. Down about 75-100 degrees from the same run on a slightly cooler day. 275 tune use to have a little smoke driving light to light and a constant haze WOT. It is now total clean with no sign of smoke at WOT even with headlights behind me.
And for the important part. It drives just like it did with the stock turbo. Have not seen one downside yet. I have no proof to back this up yet. But i will as soon as i can. The 275 tune feels at least as strong as the 310 tune, if not stronger. There was enough of a power change that i had to do another trans relearn since it could not figure out how to shift with the added power. I was really surprised to say the least. I was not expecting anywhere near that change. Not sure if i am going to try the 310 until i get something done with the trans. Maybe just for a few dyno runs. First time i got hard on the throttle i was rolling about 20mph. It almost instantly went sideways shifted 3rd and kept drifting. Cant wait to see a dyno run.
I honestly think for the price. This will be as popular as a powermaxx on a 6.0
Almost forgot to add it sucks in the filter minder with my S&B intake without the top with a clean filter before 40 psi boost... So its pulling some air.

Got word that the Elite Tow Power atmosphere turbo matched with the stock VGT made 670 HP fuel only today on Rudy's Diesel Performance's in-house dyno. The truck was equipped with tuning, an intake, an EGR delete without a wastegate, and full exhaust. Other than that, stock. That is roughly a 60 horsepower gain over what the same truck did with the stock turbos.

There somewhere we can look for prices on the atmosphere turbos?

It's a $1300 upgrade. My second post has pricing for each turbo setup. Elite Diesel Engineering produces it. You could order one through them or Rudy's Diesel Performance.

I will be doing a before and after test of my own pretty soon with the 71mm low pressure turbo from Elite. I will be getting a baseline with the 210 tune and the 310 tune on a local dyno, and then I will be adding the 71mm and doing an after test on the same dyno. I am still a few weeks out on the turbo because their isn't one available yet. I will probably do the dyno runs a week or two apart, but it won't matter because the dyno is indoors. Stay tuned!

With the Elite tow power atmosphere setup, is that a possible do it yourself project?

Yes. Ipkyss did the job himself. It's not an easy swap, but it's doable.
