View Full Version : Re-Post the DD mounting options

Before the old site crashed there were some interesting pictures of mounting ideas you guys had. The best looking option was the modified Edge mount with the DD inside.
Any one have any new ideas with pictures of mounting locations?

I hate having the DD in my windshiled for fear someone will break in to steal it thinking it is a GPS.

There have been I believe 4-5 stolen so far. There is no way I would leave mine in the truck. This vehicle is just too easy for thief's to get into. Check out some of the other forums and you'll see what I'm talking about. I mount mine in the windshield, but also don't like it there. Gets too hot with this Texas heat. I have mounted it in the cup holder on the lower part of the dash, but that is just too low to see. I'm in the process of trying to mount mine in front of the tach. Don't really use it that much anyway. Just not too sure if there is enough room, guess I'll find out soon. Some have removed the upfitter switches and installed it there. Good luck.

I went with the Edge pod. It looks great and is incredibly easy to use. Mine snaps into place nice and tight, does not need any tape or velcro to hold it in. the DD covers the edge hole completely. It is in a great spot and is easy to see and use.

post up some pictures of your DD installed so I have some ideas as to where I would like to mount it if these tunes cover what is on my truck

Yea any pics would be grate. I kind of like the simple way the edge can be just slid under the dash.. I just dont like the suction cup idea

Did you modify the opening to fit the DD unit or does it sit on the surface of the mount?
Any pics?

It sits on the surface of the pod, right over the hole for the edge. Someone else posted this method earlier and I did the same thing. I just got a short piece of flat metal, drilled a couple of holes in it to screw to the DD (using the DD mounting holes) put the plate inside the edge pod and mounted the DD. It just clamps in place. Real easy.

I will try to get some pics of it today.

Is there a possibility to enlarge the opening so the DD sits more inside the pod? Please post a picture if possible of your setup.

Thanks

This looks interesting. Can you explain how you mounted this so it stays in place?

eric.davis

yes please and how you went to fabricating and installing it in that location because i too dont like having my current setup (livewire) mounted on my window just an obstruction to me while im driving. so any installation pics or if you can remove it and re-install it for us i think we would all owe you a beer

Ok, you guys asked for it, and it is really rather simple. I took the mounting bracket that came with the DD, and took it apart. The only parts of it that I am using are the plate that screws to the back of the DD, and the arm that comes off of the to the hinged section. Leave the screw in it, back the nut off just enough to expose the threads on the screw. I used a small dab of blue loctite on mine to keep the nut on. I then held the entire assembly in place, then took a long industrial Ty-Wrap, routed it around the screw, then around the steel dash support structure behind where the ashtray used to be. Then I carefully routed the cable over to my OBDII port. It was really quite simple. I am sure someone out there can find a better way to do this, but you have to realize, that mine has been installed this way since the first day I got it, and it hasn't budged.

P.S. I am always ready for a cold one

how easy is it to monitor everything with the DD mounted down there? I like the fact that I'm able to just glance over and see all my temps, boost and fuel on the window just dont like having it on the window blocking my view.

now I like this setup and how its out of the view of the window, but is it easily removable if you dont want it there when your not in the truck?

and for both of you. do you remove the unit when you leave your truck or just leave it mounted the entire time because I would think that fuston yours would be a better idea if you plan on leaving it mounted all the time. Just dont know if I like the fact you have to look down to monitor everything. Who knows I'll probably end up getting pillar gauges after I get back once I get my lift put on. Then I wont have a problem with worrying about the DD and where to mount it.

yea when i am going about 80 or 90 i don't like the idea of taking my eyes off the road to look down to see what my EGT's are

I mounted mine where I did for the reason that I feel like it is relatively safe from prying eyes, and out of the sun. Yes, I leave it in the truck. As far as being able to see it easily, yes, it is just a quick galnce. I have only four gauges set up. Looks like squares in each corner with numbers big enough to read from the back seat. I monitor trans fluid temp, egts, engine coolant temp, and engine oil temp.

I just ordered mine today. Matt is loading up the DD tonight with the 75, 150, 210 and 250. The 6 things that I monitor on my livewire currently are Engine Oil Temp, Engine Coolant Temp, Trans Temp, Boost and Fuel Pressure. Those are what I'm concerned about. I love the look of how its mounted there and I even mock placed my livewire there and I like the look of it and probably will end up mounting it there this weekend when I get the time and figure out how to monitor all of those things. I cant wait

Graygh0st has the same mount I had. I loved it until it was stolen from my work's parking lot. We have security patrolling the parking lot and the thief broke my window to steal my DD in the Edge pod mount. That takes a whole 1 sec to rip out. Nobody reported seeing the theif. I will never leave my DD in my truck again. I will take it on trips but no daily driving.

Where did you get that mount from and can you quickly remove the DD when you park the truck?? It looks like you can but I can't tell for sure.

Thanks,

That mount is for a Sirius satalite radio. From a car kit. They all have the same mounting hole pattern as the DashDaq. Works real slick. Easy to remove, and is tight and stable when mounted. ;)

I followed with what Gray did, utilizing the Edge dash mount. Here is how I attached the DD. Take the mount that comes with the DD and wedge it on the lip of the edge mount. Also, bend straight, one of the aluminum brackets that come with the edge mount. Tighten down all the screws and she holds tight, keeping a very clean look. Hopefully you can see how I did it in the pictures. I am very happy with it!!

Bought the mount at wallyworld for 20 bucks. Like it because of the flexible stem. Daq slides on the stem so I can remove just the Daq when I need to.

Looks good. Too bad nobody manufactures a pod specifically for the DD that mounts the same way the Edge pod does. It would look even better if it was recessed into the pod the same way the Edge does.

I was thinking the same way Scott_M. I ended up going with the surface mount so all the ports and flash card slot were easily accessible. I may get another one and try to cut out a recessed mount and fabricate the rubber gromment so it looks premade. We'll see...

I got it...sorry for the late reply....did not even notice I had a PM over there.

I think with a little work that the Edge pod could be modified to take the DD in a recessed position...that would be nice...I might have to get me another Edge pod and do some cutting.

Get (2) 5/8" rubber grommets and super glue them together. Then trim one lip as shown in pic. The dash is thick in this spot so a standard grommet isn't thick enough. When drilling hole in dash be aware that there is a wire loom that runs up over the area of the gauges. It will seem odd drilling such a large hole in your dash but this size grommet works well. Pull the wire first and slip grommet over wire. Work grommet into place.

Nothing custom, but i love the location. Very clean looking, cant see any wires whatsoever do to me wiring behind the grab handle and down to the obdII port. You also cannot see it through the front because it is up to high and with my tint being so dark you cant even tell anything is there. Sorry, the pic quality isnt the best but i just grabbed a couple of shots with my iPhone while i was driving.

That's not a mounting system. He just used the suction cup and mounted it to the clear cover over the gauge cluster. I had mine like that as well. I monitored RPM with the DashDAQ so I could put the DashDAQ in that spot.

I don't have a picture of it there, but this is where I keep my DashDAQ now. I like it the best of all the places I've tried.

I have tried to mount it there with the suction cup. I guess the DD XL suction cup mounting arm is a lot longer than the original DD shown in the pic because when I put it there it sticks out 5" and looks retarded... no to mention screams "steal me".

I like where you mounted yours though. Might try that as well.
