View Full Version : DPF Delete vs. Cat + DPF Delete

Have any of you run a DPF delete pipe and then changed to the full delete pipe? It looks like the downpipe is 4" and then shrinks before it gets to the cat.

Just wondering if there is a significant amount of power to be gained here? Or maybe just some cool turbo noise? Either way, I may be in :D

I at first had justa DPF delete pipe...then went to a full cat/dpf delete pipe. I dunno about performance...nothing you can really feel, sound is a bit better IMO, and its an easier install, and much cleaner setup if you ask me.

2x - The install is much easier.

Opinion only, but the turbo whistle is much nicer coming-off the boost above 20lbs, and the responsiveness "feels" better. Since install I've been able to chirp the tires on the dually in a straight line (4.30 gear) where I was unable to prior. Also, my boost begged at 33 psi with the 250hp tune, where 38psi is now typical.

At 60mph, EGRTA dropped approx. 80 degF (for what it's worth). Sounds like a GIANT HAIR DRYER (yes - yelling) when you go through a tunnel.:D

Can you get just the downpipe/cat delete if you alread the DPF delete?

I have just installed the DPF/DOC delete w/ the 210 tune. I was wondering if those that have run the DPF only vs the DPF/DOC delete can elaborate on the sound differences. I don't care for the hair dryer sound and was wondering if the DPF only w/ the DOC still on would eliminate the hair dryer.

Also, would replacing the stock muffler back with an aftermarket muffler and 4" or 5" outlet would make any difference?

Thanks,
JS

I hear a muffler will help, a few have done it and liked the results.

The best way to help with the hair dryer sound is a muffler. I have the flo-pro kit with the muffler and it sounds good. I need to get a sound clip up...hopefully in the next few days I can.

A sound clip would be great. After coming from a straight-piped 6.0L (sounded like a big block at WOT), anything to help the hair dryer would be a nice touch.

Set us up with a clip !

I would love to hear a sound clip. Mine sounds like a hair dryer with the stock dpf back exhaust with the muffler. I wish the 6.4s sounded like the 6.0 straight piped. Those sound nice.

Anyone hear of, or using an AERO Muffler ? This thing seems a bit different than the flow-thru design we have, and might add just enough restriction to make some rumble.....without choking things. I'm doing some more reading on the AERO.

I run the aero but I am dpf back. Not as much of the hair dryer sound.

I took off my DOC/DPF delete and replaced it w/ a DPF only delete. The majority of the swooshing sound is gone. I would guess probably 80%.

The turbos don't seem to spool quite as fast or spool down as fast either. Have no idea about mileage yet.

I think I'll replace the factory muffler/exhaust pipes w/ something aftermarket that includes a muffler. My goal is not really anything louder, but something w/ a more robust sound.

ok, so this might be a stupid question but the exhaust that comes in the kit, is that a complete exhast or just the delete pipe? does it come with a muffler also or not. cause i want to replace the whole exhaust i know i should've asked donna but it totally slipped my mind. please somebody clear this up for me.

thanks

I am fairly sure you can order exhaust w/ or w/out a muffler. When you don't have the muffler, you install a muffler delete pipe (that comes in the exhaust kits). Should you decide to install the muffler later, you can just replace the muffler delete pipe w/ the muffler.

This is mine with Powerstrokers full DPF/DOC straight-thru delete from the downpipe back, no other muffler, just the stock resonator near the back.

This was done when I had the SCT 1.26 on mine, but for sound it wont make any difference between the SCT and the Spartan 275 which is on mine now.

why do some people have powerstrokers delete, cause when you buy the dd package it comes with a exhaust. or is it cheaper to piece it all out?

when I did mine a couple of months ago, I went with the Flo Pro cat/dpf delete complete exhaust system with a muffler so that I didn't have so much of that hair dryer sound(a friend of mine has the dpf straight pipe setup and it ain't a pretty sound(in my opinion), I also tow a 12000 lb boat and didn't want a drone in the cab under load. I bought the whole kit from Spartan so that everything worked together and if I had any b*tches I only had to make one phone call, that way you don't get the runaround of well you should have bought this instead of that because it's not my fault that that doesn't work right(not saying that about Spartan just a general statement from past experiences with different suppliers in the past)

I am running a DPF delete w/ the CAT in place into a Magnaflow 16983 catback system. I am using the muffler and it all exits into a 5" tip. It looks very nice and sounds SO much better than the factory tailpipe. All of the airflow noise is gone! I may switch back to the DPF/DOC delete and see if it still sounds OK, but I haven't decided yet. I can't really speak to any mileage or power gains as I also loaded the new 210 tune at the same time.

well i installed everything on monday, 275,and flo pro exhaust. still waiting on the s&b cai to come. but the sound of the downpipe back exhaust is beautiful! no comparison to just the delete pipe in my ears lol... it has that nice rumble until you nail it and its all turbo. i love it.

I'm running the Flo Pro downpipe back with the MBRP Chrome tip and I agree that it sounds great. Not loud on the highway and enough rumble in town that people can tell it's not stock. Also fun to hear the turbos whistle when I put it down and use the 275hp Nutty tune!!

Also in an answer to the original post I just read a report about 15mins ago where a guy did the DPF delete and tuned his truck leaving the Cat on. Apparently the Cat plugged off and the back pressure blew every seal in the engine and turned it into a boat anchor. And of course NO WARRANTY from Ford so that's a bit of a pricey lesson to learn. A few people confirm it's a true story so in my opinion it's not worth chancing it and leaving the Cat on and I'd change it all out just to be safe.

The problem was likely the "self" tune ;)

Yeah I have no confirmation on what tuner was used and my guess was that it was a cheap one but thought I'd still pass along the info.
