View Full Version : Turbo failure ?

I think possibly one of my turbos is not working. There is more of a turbo lag than there used to be. Is this even possible that one of them has stopped working, or would it be more obvious than that?
I had reloaded my 250 tune after taking the truck to the dealer, and I romped it pretty hard when I first drove it. It made some noises that werent normal sounding and then didn't feel as powerful. I thought it was probably because it wasn't warmed up yet. I haven't thought much more about it since then, and that was over a month ago. I passed a car this morning and there was a 2 or 3 second delay before I had power so I started wondering again.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Noises? What kind of noises? The only really odd noise a turbo can make is when its bearing surfaces decide they don't want to be bearing surfaces anymore - ala complete seizure. It is possible you've run something thru the intake and damaged the impeller on the low pressure turbo. Have you pulled the intake tube and looked closely at the low pressure turbo impeller? Any chips, jagged edges or splits on the outer edges of the impeller? Does it spin with your finger easily? Also make sure your VGT actuator arm moves freely. (with the key off). You'll feel some resistance but very little.

So there is not much possibility of a failure other than the fan seizing up from blockage or bearing failure?
If that's the case I should be ok.
The noise I heard is hard to explain. I would assume most people with the same set up as mine have heard the intake noise when you stomp it and then let off in a short time. It's a rush of air and then you can hear the turbos spinning but the "dump" sound in there too. Kinda like if you had a 5k pound trailor full of cardboard that wasn't strapped down, and you slammed on the brakes. All that cardboard slams forward in individual pieces with rapid succession. ( see, I told you it was hard to explain )
It was like something had to have broken, but I couldn't tell much difference except the lack of power. Everything still sounds OK, I just feel more of a turbo lag than I used to.

you just reloaded the tune .... drive it hard for a while and let it adapt back to your driving style.... if the problem continues let us know ..
